This holds good equally for welding shops, and adequate safeguards have to be provided to prevent pollution through fume generation. Historical Background (ARC and ARC Welding):
It was as far back, as in 1809 in England, that Sir Humphry Davy first described his experiment on electric arc. Almost 75 years later, in 1885, Benardos and Olczewski received a patent in the field of arc welding. That was the beginning of arc welding, using a single carbon electrode to create and sustain an arc, and adding filler metal feeding a rod into the arc or molten puddle. In 1892, Slavianeff patented the use of metal electrodes (bare wire). In 1907, Oscar Kjellberg, a Swedish Engineer, secured a patent for a covered electrode and this marked the beginning of what we recognise today as one of our leading methods of welding. Fig. 1 shows the progressive developments in the field of Arc Welding.
